William & Barbara with children Leona & Henry
The Heumann Women (middle)
Robert William with Leona & grandmother Barbara, 1914
On the 1870 census Barbara Heuman is listed as 17 years old and born in Prussia which could put her birth in 1853, but she was born on Apr 22, 1854 according to her daughter Leona. She died of a heart attack in 1921.
Sandra Thorne Borgon (1942) writes:
Barbara Heuman was born in "Minchen" , Germany (according to my grandmother's note but I am certain Gramma mean Munich as it was called Munchen at one time) and died of a heart ailment.
Barbara (incidentally, my cousin was named after her --Uncle Paul's daughter) told of growing up in Bay City hearing timber wolves howling and how terrified she was. (Michigan is still known as the timber wolf state.) Anyway, they grew corn and then swapped some of it with the Indian children who gave her beads and trinkets in return. There were many Indians who came into her father's store. If it was bitter cold, the Indians would sleep in there around the store's big stove overnight.
Barbara's brothers were John and Charley and sisters were Mary, Raddie and Dena. I don't know what those last two were abbreviated from - maybe something German.
